It never fails that every year when summer hits my kids sprint out the back door, and forget school was ever a thing for them! This year to encourage a love of reading, and to help them stay on track for next year I am so excited to start a summer reading challenge! There are so many different ways you can implement a reading challenge, but I am going to give you just a few!
1- Consider downloading a fun reading challenge online. There are tons of variants from reading bingo, or a board game style all the way to a simple list. However you want to display the visual aspects of your reading challenge, I encourage you to make it fun, maybe use stamps or stickers to mark off your journey! Teachers Pay Teachers, Pinterest, and simple Google searches will yield you lots of printables!
2- If your kids are fueled by more physically exciting activities, consider having a treasure chest filled with things they love! Once they have read through a book they get to pick a treasure! Similarly you could also consider a basket of special snacks as an option instead!
3- Another option would be to make a chart and for every book they read they get closer and closer to a big end goal! A trip to the museum, an opportunity to buy a new book, whatever will motivate your reader!
4- Join in on the fun! You can always join your own reading challenge and read at the same time! If you have an especially competitive child you could even race them to the end of the reading challenge!Â
Above all else I encourage you to read with them! Children want to read with you, and that special time you spend reading will hopefully be beautiful memories for you all!
Have you ever tried a summer reading challenge with your kids?
Yes! It's such a great tool!
